Run Club Culture: a conversation
The first official Running Sucks event? You should come to that. Plus a podcast appearance, something from the vault, and a love letter to running.
Announcing the first official Running Sucks event, and it’s in London.
Running has risen to the top of every conversation about general culture (more about that on Thursday). Run clubs are the cutting edge of that. It’s maybe one of the reasons I’ve focused upon them so much over the past year. This event is the natural next step into diving into running culture.
I’m bringing together some of the absolute best from UK run club history to talk about this thing that we love.
Run Club Culture: a conversation
The first guest on the panel is Sir Charlie Dark MBE, who is widely regarded as the godfather of UK run club culture with his founding of Run Dem Crew in 2007.
In May, Charlie spent some time airing his frustrations and recommendations on the boom, and the direction of run club culture. His thorough insights came from a place of deep knowledge, and deeper love. This evening will be a unique chance to immerse yourself in essential conversation. Get your tickets now.
If Charlie represents the beginning, the venue is the newest piece. Knees Up is the brand new physical home of Your Friendly Runners - a massive run crew in East London. With this event, we’re making sure it can call itself an all-day cafe.
More guests and details announced every week. See you soon

Running Sucks x Do Epic Shit Today podcast
Am I this week’s writer who runs? Why not. I was the 50th guest on the brilliant Do Epic Shit Today podcast with Hannah AKA Tallish.
We talked about turning creativity into real product, why running really does suck, me writing copy for big brands vs building up my small brand, what I absolutely love about running culture, and my favorite doughnut. Give it a listen.
Last week on Running Sucks
I interviewed Maggie Mertens about her cool new book, and I negged on the men in charge of capitalism a bunch. Personally, I am a fan of progress. I am a fan of more people doing more cool stuff. I’m certain that this book will help with that
Here’s the audio voiceover that I rambled through for a few minutes. These will probably improve! It’s currently a very low bar.
Last YEAR on Running Sucks
I wrote about a run club called the L.A. Cinephile Run Club. My friend Sean is the creative brain behind this group that runs around filming locations. He started off with Halloween locations in Pasadena, but has also done Fast & Furious, Reservoir Dogs, and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. It’s so fun.
If you’re in Los Angeles, you should 1) say hi to me, and 2) run with Sean.
If you love running so much, why don’t you marry it??
This week, I enjoyed this love letter to running by
. It’s true, isn’t it: running is like a partner. Running sees us in our most glorious moments, and running is there when we’re at rock bottom. It might be in the background but when you reconnect, it’s like the warm hug you needed. Anyway. Take a read. It’s nice.Running Sucks Haiku of the Week

My running window?!
Euro 2024 started on Friday. That means I have six hours of international football tournament to fit into my life this week, and the 6am starts are troublesome for fitting a run in. By 8am, it’s too warm for me.
And let’s not talk about the jury duty I’m on this week or I’ll regret having become an American citizen.
