It's the policy's exclusion of founder brands and smaller organizations that still actually embody parts of the community yet can't pay-to-play at the major marathon level. In NYC it's Bandit, Minted, Miler or Bakline. Nobody is upset for McDonalds Nike or Zales. It signals the purpose of the event has evolved to be pure $$ and not the city or it's people
Counterview: there was a horrible, loud big-brand activation 100 yds down from my popsicles at LAM. That to me was more all about the money. LA doesn't have as rich a culture of homegrown brands but it certainly wasn't local music by local people. So maybe this is just my PTSD, but less (honestly, none) of that branded organized fun, please.
It’s definitely a spectrum without clear cut lines and the middle is gray and messy. We can probably all agree on the small and large ends of the spectrum buts tough when these policies decide for us based on values that aren’t our own.
Yeah, it's where you choose to draw the line, and that's gonna be different for everyone, but NYC honestly makes sense to me. A more nuanced policy would likely get them called out for favoritism or something. It's a no-win.

That last one is spooky.
