I loved this quote, and find it to be true for me as well. Running trails, I love longer, drawn-out jams/DJ mixes. City running is hip-hop and metal:
“If I’m running in the countryside, I like to listen to music more. I quite like psych music, dronier Krautrock that I can get into. If I’m in the city, I have a ‘90s hip hop playlist. If I’m feeling angry, I put on a pop playlist where everything’s really fast and bombastic.”
Idlewild were the first proper band I saw live, at Portsmouth Guildhall in the autumn of 1998. I’d not heard much of them, beyond the little that Steve Lamacq and Jo Whiley played on the Evening Session, but they were supporting Ash, who I was obsessed with as a 14 year old.
As soon as I could, I bought Captain and Hope is Important and played them over and over and over again. Those two CDs, and 100 Broken Windows, are still part of the rotating selection of CDs that get played in the car (the only CD player I own).
Anyway, that’s a bit of a “Cool story, Hansel” sort of meandering personal anecdote, but I just wanted to say: YES to Idlewild. Thanks for writing about them.

Loved this, thank you. And the new album is magnificent!

I’ll have a listen to the new album.
